在山区温泉乡汤村，有一家名为“春屋”的艺伎馆，老板梦千代，艺伎有渡边玉惠、菊奴、阿红、阿兔等人。梦千代从医院得知自己患了白血病，将不久于人世。在离开医院回家的火车上，有一个女人摔下了深谷，与她同行的叫石田的男人被捕。传说这个女人怀上了石田的孩子，石田视其为累赘．所以杀了她。梦千代认为她是自杀。翌日，梦千代去春川的剧团找了解真相的宗方胜打听，无所获。她害怕死．经玉惠劝说，她才重新鼓起生活的勇气。一天，梦千代又去找宗方时晕倒了，宗方知道了梦千代的病情。为了查清石田事件的真相，刑警藤森也来找宗方调查。后来查明宗方的名字是伪造的，15 年前他因杀死父亲而被通缉。梦千代为此而陷人痛苦之中。她决定去隐歧岛找宗方。在那里她表白自己对宗方的爱慕之情，并委身于他。随后，宗方把十分虚弱的梦千代送回“春屋”。梦千代死去了，宗方也被藤森逮捕了。
